PRE-SUBSCRIPTION: The geometry of Islamic ornaments

The pre-subscription for ‘The geometry of Islamic ornaments’ is open. This beautiful collector's edition by artist Yousef Kafu represents his personal contribution to maintaining Islamic tradition and art moving forward, for generations to come.

Yousef Kafu was born in Libya. As a young boy he was commended for his creative talent and in his early twenties he moved to The Netherlands to study Graphic Design. Whilst studying, Yousef co-created the first Arabic typewriter, which revolutionised the Arabic print world.

Yousef’s successful career spanned over 50 years; representing many western companies, designing their brand identities and helping them tap into previously untouched commercial marketplaces in the Arab world. After retiring from his commercial endeavours, Yousef returned to his roots and further explored his position as an artist.

Yousef’s work acts as a bridge between the past and the present and represents a modern expression of Islamic culture. Traditionally Muslim craftsmen engaged in producing geometric patterns on wood, marble, metal, ceramics, employing the traditional tools of compasses and rulers. Yousef has translated these methods into new designs. The fundamental concept of Yousef’s work lies in the “repeat unit” of a design, systematically arranged. Each artwork follows a journey from an initial sketch to a unique three-dimensional print, utilising colour to add depth and perspective.

‘The geometry of Islamic ornaments’ represents Yousef’s personal contribution to maintaining Islamic tradition and art moving forward, for generations to come.
