‘Het doel van het bestaan is het maken van een zelfportret – Philip Akkerman’ (The purpose of being is making a self-portrait – Philip Akkerman) comprises more than 35 years of self-portraits by artist Philip Akkerman and beautifully shows us the development in his work over the years. This wonderful large shaped book contains 205 works of art by Philip. A special, only rarely used, printing technique makes it almost tangible.
In addition to the book, this collector's edition includes a signed silkscreen print, the composition and download called 'Philip' by Jameszoo and a paperback book with highlights from Philips' diary notes. With this diary we follow the artist from his academy days. He describes his struggle with the technique, with the art world and with himself. A humorous report.

In the film 'Old Master no secrets' painter Philip Akkerman shares the technical knowledge he has acquired over the past forty years. The secret of the Old Masters, as Akkerman reveals in his studio, is that they divided the work in three steps: drawing, grisaille and color. By approaching each step individually, the Old Masters obtained maximum control over the result of the painting. For Akkerman, this technique enables him to paint his self-portraits in any which way that pops up in his mind. 'Old Master no secrets' is a 96 minute slow movie by Dutch filmmaker Maarten de Kroon, inspired and presented by Philip Akkerman.
